Meet the Artist: Direct Shift

We’re back with another exciting installment of our “Meet the Artists” series, and this time, we’re shining the spotlight on Direct Shift and his track “RAW.” Get ready to groove as we dive into the world of Direct Shift and discover what makes his own “RAW” flavour.

Where to find Direct Shift

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in the world of music production?

I’m Direct Shift, my journey began in 2006 when I started as a DJ, exploring genres like nu-rave and dance-punk. However, a pivotal moment in my musical evolution occurred in 2008 when a friend handed me a USB drive containing the movie “Berlin Calling.” Little did I know that inside that drive was a folder containing the software Ableton Live. That day changed my life forever.

Let’s dive right into your contribution to Disciples of Distortion Volume 2. Can you give us some insight into the creative process behind your track?

My track in the Disciples of Distortion Volume 2 compilation, titled ‘RAW,’ delves into the realm of Neurofunk with influences from Black Sun Empire. Surprisingly, it came together in just 3-4 days. The inspiration struck while experimenting with basslines in Vital and Serum, leading to an irresistible groove. The entire track, except for the drums and vocals, was crafted from that main bassline.

I’ve learned the value of patience and perseverance, understanding that self-doubt is part of artistic growth.

Stonx Community

Are there any unique elements or techniques you used in your track that you’d like to share with your listeners?

In ‘RAW,’ nearly everything you hear, except for the drums and vocals, originated from a single source—the main bassline. It served as the driving force behind the entire composition. This approach adds a unique character to the track and exemplifies the power of experimentation and innovation in Neurofunk.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?

Black Sun Empire, State Of Mind, Nais, Gydra, Paperclip, Spor

Can you share a particularly challenging moment you’ve encountered in your music production journey and how you overcame it?

One of my significant challenges has been battling imposter syndrome, which can erode self-belief. However, the Stonx community’s unwavering support and encouragement have been a lifeline. They remind me that I belong in the music world and help me build confidence. While imposter syndrome still lurks, I’m committed to growth and embracing my unique path.

How do you feel you’ve evolved as an artist since your earlier work, and what lessons have you learned along the way?

My journey as an artist has been transformative, marked by significant growth and progress. I’ve learned the value of patience and perseverance, understanding that self-doubt is part of artistic growth. Experimentation has been crucial in finding my own sound and style. I’m excited about the future, with new tunes on the horizon and a commitment to continuous evolution.

The music community is often a source of inspiration and support. How has being a part of the Stonx Music community and collaborating with other artists influenced your work?

Being a part of the Stonx Music community has profoundly influenced my work. It’s a close-knit family of passionate individuals who share a deep love for music. We support each other through feedback, idea sharing, and production techniques. The monthly feedback sessions with – Ollie on Twitch provide invaluable critique, enhancing our music’s quality. Stonx is not just a community; it’s a source of inspiration and encouragement that drives me to push artistic boundaries.

Are there any fellow artists you’d like to give a shoutout to for their contributions or influence on your music?

I’d like to give a shoutout to some remarkable artists who have greatly influenced my music journey. First and foremost, Stonx has been a constant source of mentorship and inspiration. Sindicate’s unique sound and professionalism have made a profound impact. The VA LP crew, especially O&P, showcases incredible creativity. Korax’s deep sound and Aye Rights’ older-era neurofunk grooves have been wellsprings of inspiration.

Neurofunk is known for its distinctive sound. How do you approach experimenting with and pushing the boundaries of the genre in your music?

In my exploration of Neurofunk, I prioritize creating something unique that resonates deeply with my artistic sensibilities. Music, to me, is an expression of the soul, a journey where I channel emotions, experiences, and creativity into sonic landscapes. I let creativity flow freely, blurring genre boundaries to capture moments and emotions authentically. Neurofunk’s distinct sound provides a rich canvas, and by staying true to my artistic instincts, I aim to contribute to its evolution while honoring its roots.

Are there any other musical genres or styles you’re interested in exploring in the future?

Maybe techno?

What would you consider to be a significant highlight in your music career so far?

A significant highlight in my music career has been the opportunity to participate in this VA alongside emerging talents. It’s a testament to my creative journey and progress. I’ve transitioned from considering music as a hobby to recognizing it as a genuine passion and pursuit. This moment marks my renewed commitment to music production and sets the stage for exciting future endeavors.

Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist? Are there any dream collaborations or projects you’re working on?

I have several exciting goals and aspirations as an artist. In the immediate future, I’m focused on completing the next two EPs that I’m currently working on. These projects are incredibly important to me, and I can’t wait to share the music with my listeners. Beyond that, I have some dream collaborations in mind. One of my top priorities is to collaborate with Sindicate, whose unique sound and professional level have always been a tremendous inspiration. Additionally, I’d love to join forces with Korax, an artist whose contributions to the scene I deeply respect.

What advice would you offer to up-and-coming producers who aspire to make their mark in the music industry?

For aspiring producers, my advice is simple yet essential. Keep going, stay committed to honing your skills, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Find a supportive community of like-minded individuals; they can provide invaluable feedback and inspiration. And most importantly, overcome overthinking, trust your instincts, and let your unique voice shine through in your music. Success in the music industry comes from determination, community, and self-belief.

Are there any production tips or resources you wish you had known about when you were starting out?

I highly recommend seeking out supportive and collaborative communities. These spaces can provide a wealth of production tips, feedback, and resources that can accelerate your learning curve and help you navigate the complex world of music production more effectively.

When you’re not making music, how do you like to spend your free time?

I treasure the time spent with my family. They’re my anchor and a source of inspiration in everything I do. Outside of that, you might find me at work, pouring my energy into my professional pursuits. And, when I’m in the mood for some relaxation and entertainment, I occasionally indulge in a bit of gaming. PlayStation and Starcraft provide the perfect escape into immersive worlds where I can unwind and recharge.

Can you share a fun or quirky fact about yourself that your fans might not know?

Fun fact: I hold a bachelor’s degree in ‘Engineering-Psychological Maintenance of Information Technologies,’ which essentially makes me a programmer-psychologist.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans and listeners about your music, upcoming projects, or your journey as an artist?

Keep an eye on my SoundCloud page for regular updates on upcoming releases and behind-the-scenes insights. Thank you for being part of this adventure with me, and I can’t wait to share more sonic experiences with you in the future.
